The Marathi Teachers Training College

The Samiti was in constant need of trained teachers to teach more systematically and efficiently. The absence of Marathi medium-training college in this part made the Samiti more concerned about the need of Teachers Training College. With the help of Shri.S.R.Tawade, then Education Inspector and Administrative Officer, Shamrao Bidi Education Adviser to then Bombay State, the Society decided to start a Marathi training College. After obtaining permission to start the same, the training college was formally inaugurated by the Director of Education Mr.S.M.Moose on June 17, 1942. This was the only co-educating institution in the entire Bombay State. In the last 6 decades the college has trained more than ten thousand students to be good teachers and they, in return have dedicated themselves to train and shape the minds of the younger generation in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa States of India. The Society encouraged the teachers to qualify themselves with higher education and posses University degree. Hundreds of teachers have availed of this opportunity.

The institution was housed in Mahila Vidyalay, Belgaum in the early days. Shri. M.A.Bidikar the first Principal of the college who worked honourarily and natured the college in the hard early days. Mr. P.H.Walvekar stepped in the shoes of Shri.Bidikar and worked like a missionary from 1947 to 1952. Mr. B.G.Godbole took over from Mr. P.H.Walvekar and continued to work in the same spirit. The noted poetess of Marathi, Late Smt. Indira Sant was the next Principal of the College who guided its destiny from 1953 to 1972. She was a dedicated teacher and a strict disciplinarian. As she was a basic trained teacher who made the institution self-supported, she worked almost round the clock and round the year to imbibe service, knowledge, importance of hard work and patriotism in the building teachers. It was Mrs. Indiara Sant who made the Training College a reputed Institution, throughout the then Bombay State and Karnataka State.

Late Mr.Madhusudan Gokhale and others carried tourch further. The progress and the achievements were highly praised by Late Prime Minister Hon. Shri Morarji Desai and political leaders kile H.V.Pataskar, Shri. Dayanand Bandodkar, Br. Nath pai, Br.G.D.Patil, Shri N.G.Gore and scholars of international repute and Union Finance Minister, Shri C.D.Deshmukh, Champion of Bhudan Movement Shri. Vinoba Bhave and literary authorities like Datto Vaman Potdar, Vachaspati Kshirsagar, Shri.V.D.Ghate Tarkateerth Laxman Shastri Joshi, Mahadev Shastri Joshi, Acharya P.K.Atre, Shri N.S.Phadake visited the college and appreciated the work.
